Feature Exploration:

Travels of Twain

From San Francisco to Hartford, CT you can find traces of Mark Twain. He was a reporter in San Francisco, went to The Gold Country in hopes of striking it rich - you can find his cabin nestled in the woods near Angels Camp. He wrote a short story after his experiences here about a frog jumping contest in Calaveras County. And you can walk in his footsteps around Lake Tahoe and in Virginia City, Nevada.

He was born in Florida, MO and grew up in Hannibal, MO the setting of the famed Tom Sawyer. Part of the inspiration for some of his books came from his years as a riverboat pilot navigating the Mississippi.

Later in life he lived in Buffalo, NY and Hartford, CT where he penned Tom Sawyer, Life on the Mississippi, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, and A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court. He traipsed through Manhattan, and he is buried in Elmira, NY where he wrote Huckleberry Finn.

He traveled extensively abroad as well. And his writings helped put Hawaii on the map.
